FGG Photo of the Week: Body Electric

When I noticed this image in our FGG Girls Flickr Group, I was immediately struck by its power and gentle grace.

But I also appreciated the courage it took to post this photo, daring to appear beautiful and sensual while also revealing curves seldom seen in fashion magazines, television, or film.

Any time a woman appreciates herself in this way, we all win. Thanks for letting your light shine, Kate!

I love how the shadows accentuate the curves but still the strength is so obvious. Lovely.

Wow, imagine my surprise when I clicked on a link and saw my picture here! :) Thanks!

Thanks also for the compliments, I truly appreciate them! It was hard to take a photo showing myself in this way, even harder yet to click that “Upload” button to put it out in front of the whole world.

This shot is one that I took as part of my “365″ project a few years back, taking a self-portrait every day for a year. I started the project to learn more about photography and to become more comfortable in front of a camera for a change. It was an eye-opening, emotional experience to find a new way to present myself each and every day. Staring at photos of yourself is difficult, day after day, but I came to appreciate myself and my body so much more over the course of that year. I’m still fighting my own internal battles over size and my body, but completing this project helped me to see beauty I never knew was there…
