Smart & Sexy: Knee Socks for Plus-Size Legs
Gorgeous knit, knee socks from SockDreams.com
It seemed like last year we could toss a rock in any direction and hit an adorable photo of someone wearing knee or thigh-high socks. Three times out of four, one of those would be either jumping socks, socks stretching far up into the air, or socks accidentally-on-purpose resting cute and nonchalant against a wall.
I admit: eventually I’d seen enough and I got curious and purchased a pair for myself. One size fits all, right? Uhh, right. They now belong to my teenage daughter.
So as fall approaches, we thought it apropos to do a mini-post on our search for fun, sexy, stripey, silly, colorful, elegant and/or dreamy knee and thigh-high socks for full-figured legs (hint: we’ll be doing awesome fall boots later this week). Because we shouldn’t have to cut the circulation off to our feet just to be cute and sassy. Here’s what we found:
Torrid
Known for its sassy plus-size styles, I wasn’t at all surprised to find a fun selection of wide-calf knee socks at Torrid. Check out the neon green, the black-and-white playing card and the slouch socks. Favorites!
Just My Size
I’d love to see JMS get a little more youthful and daring, but for understated, solid-color, wide-calf knee socks, this is a nice selection.
Avenue
Available in a 6-pack of solid or textured-multi options, Avenue’s knee socks are affordable and come in a roomy XXL option.
WarmLegwear.com
These plus-size cable-knit knee socks are great for dress wear, casual wear, even under ski-boots. These + a nice fire = perfect.
SockDreams.com
One word: YUM. Delicious. Divine. Okay, that’s three. But these socks were love at first sight. I was initially disappointed that I didn’t find much on Etsy, but then saw these and all was right with the world again.
Lands’ End
For more conservative but still girlish style aplenty, check out Lands’ End’s 3-pack of knee socks available in L-XL.
Lane Bryant
Knee-high hosiery style socks for business and evening wear. Like JMS, I’d like to see LB get a little bolder with its line, but these could be paired with something daring and look great.
What about you? Do you have any favorite, fat-girl-friendly knee or thigh-high socks? Let us know! Leave us a comment or, better yet, show yours off in the FGG Girls Flickr group.
I’ve never been a big knee high person. But I kind of like Thox sox. Not specifically made for plus sizes but a nice fit.
I think these are cute, but have never been sure if I could pull them off. I don’t have heavy legs. But what exactly do you wear them with?
Not a fan. I have seen girls wearing knee hi peeking out of the top of their boots, which has a cute look! Very streetwear!
I read in the fatshionista forum on livejournal the theory that straight-sized thigh-highs are decent fat-girl knee highs. After being disappointed by some Avenue knee-highs (no staying-up power, not quite tall enough for me, not really wide enough for my 22″ calves)- I tested this theory out last week.
IT IS TRUE. STRAIGHT SIZED THIGH HIGHS ARE SOOOOOOO FAT GIRL KNEE HIGHS AND IT IS AWESOME.
I mean, they’re a bit tight, but then, my calves/knees are big, even for fat girls. The point is- they fit, AND they stay up. Win!
Moe and Faky: thanks for the tips!
Pieces of me: My favorite look for them is with a knee-length skirt, but some have worn them with shorts, or even longer skirts as a surprise-peek replacement for nylons.
Soho: That does sound cute. Hmm…
great; now if someone would make nude fishnet tights, my fall would be complete!
I spent a damn HOUR at Sock Dreams yesterday, sighing and oooing over the gorgeously sexy thigh highs that I am convinced I cannot wear. I tried thigh highs a few times back in HS, when I was in good shape and a mere 130, and the damn things wouldn’t stay up. And of course I fear that I wouldn’t find a garter belt to fit around my hips and belly. So instead, I just stare and lust and repeat my mantra: “When I lose the weight someday, I’m so going broke shopping for a new wardrobe.” (caveat: i’ve been saying this for years, “someday” hasn’t come yet)
Lillllyyyyyy… nooooooo! *slow motion*
No saying the “S” word (someday) around THIS blog. I dare you to pick out a pair of the socks we featured here and give them a try. Gina’s idea about nude fishnets is a good one, too, if you’re worried about them staying up. How about over tights?
THIS POST is what brought me to this site.
I’m sock-obsessed & was scouring the web in search of some knee-high swankysox to fit my… ‘ample’ calves.
There is hope!? Dare I believe!?
*insert inspirational light and music here*
There is hope, indeed. Go forth now and sock, Mona. Then come back and show-and-tell us.
I love sock dreams but I got greedy and tried to order from the clearance without making sure it was plus sized, and I am an inbetweenie 38″-40″ hips. For women my size I have to recommend against the vertically inclined (supposed to stretch 20″ max, but that max is really uncomfortable and rolls) which were on sale for $6, and the striped thigh high with heart top, which were also $6. I think a lot of their socks come up much lower than the thin models which is expected, but these two pairs are both long enough to come way up without having sideways stretch enough to be comfortable when they get there.
Good to know, thanks Caitlan!
Does anyone know of any UK stores that sell larger sized knee high socks? I’m totally in love with them but they dont fit :/
I would like socks not knee highs that have no stretch but come in individual sizes. My shoe size is 9; but I have weyerhauser legs. When my calves are swollen they measure 17″. Also, I have very bad circulation. Can anyone help?
I purchased the plus size cable knee socks from warmlegwear.com for my daughter. Both the acrylic and wool styles are soft and good quality. It’s hard to find socks to fit wider legs and I’m glad to see companies starting to carry these.
Well I have some good news! There is this lady on ebay that makes socks, and I asked her if she would make a custom set for me, thigh high socks. She said she will make a sample pair for me and if they work then I can give out her information so she can make them for others too! She is just getting started on these and I will keep you informed!
She makes them out of wool but I am allergic so she is just making them out of something else.
Hi guys, great tips, but does anyone know anything about where you can get larger sized over the knee (thigh high) socks?
Thanks! x
Thank you -so- much for posting this. I just bought a pair of thigh high socks from Sock Dreams. I had resigned to the fact that I would never, ever be able to wear thigh highs because of my weight… But, cross my fingers, looks like I will.
Thank you SO much for posting this! I bought some knee-high socks off the clearance rack at Target and was p*ssed when I got home and tried them on. My calves are an average size and these were in the women’s section, so I don’t know who they were marketing these for. Looking back, it’s probably why they were on clearance! : P
Thank you so much for this! I know it is rather late, but I was so upset after trying on a super cute pair of knee highs that felt as though I had put my legs in corsets, that I was desperate. After plenty of searching I stumbled upon this blog and found my new love, Sock Dreams! We are very happy together after four purchases! I have a 17 inch calf and a 25 inch thigh and I found that thy even cater to me! Thank you so much for this! If you find any more sites like Sock Dreams with great selections please let the rest of us know, because I am still searching!
Think you for this! I am a plus size lolita and it is so very heard for me to find knee high socks ^_^
