Ask FGG: Where Can I Find Cheap Plus-Size Pajamas?

Target and Wal Mart offer affordable and adorable sleepwear in larger sizes

Someone at FGG may have a slight addiction to Gilligan & O’Malley PJs

A recent Ask FGG covered plus size lingerie, and this week, we’re tackling a related reader question:

I’m a size 22 and need to find some cute PJs that don’t cost a fortune or look like something my granny would wear. Help!

This is one I was excited to take on, because after years of wearing men’s flannel PJ pants and over-sized t-shirts, I discovered Gilligan & O’Malley at Target. They’re often much cheaper than Lane Bryant, where it seems the pickins have been slim in the PJ section in their stores lately, too (or is that just me?). Many of the Gilligan & O’Malley pajamas come in a stretchy, silky polyester/spandex fabric that is absolutely divine against your skin. They come in feminine, flirty styles (as opposed to the more matronly offerings many retailers reserve for plus size women). Even better: they’re generously sized. I wore an XXL pajama set (listed as a size 20 online) while pregnant with my third son and pushing a size 24, and I purchased two pair of XL when I was a 22 and they fit comfortably (though I’m not particularly large-chested, so you’ll want to compare these sizes yourself).

The runner-up in the cute plus size pajama department: Wal Mart.

We’re already in love with their affordable-and-cute Danskin Now workout wear, and while I haven’t tried out any of their fabrics, there are quite a few styles to choose from at a great price point – and they go up to a size 3X.

What about you, readers? Find any generously sized, slinky, feminine or sexy PJs for a song lately? Tell us about it in the comments.

Perimenopausal here, and it’s tricky because I need to sleep in cotton rather than poly or even poly blends, to avoid night sweats.

I’d agree with you that Lane Bryant has been both stingy in selection and pricey in their pajama offerings. However, I have found their cotton knit pajama pants at a great price at their outlet store. If I can’t find a cotton top to go with it, I use coordinating Just My Size t-shirts from Wal-Mart.

I have also found cute and affordable plus size pajamas at strip mall offerings like Fashion Bug. I can’t think of the name of the one that is closest to me, though, and it may just be something that is regional. I don’t normally have much luck at these stores except for summer tops, tanks, etc., but I’ve been surprised that they have sleepwear that works, and a a lower price.

  2. I tend to go for the G&M robes at target. Once I bought some pretty black on black silky pants. But the tops never fit me bc I’m a 42DDD. That black & white number in your pic is another one I tried on but the chest portion was severly lacking for me, sadly.

I’ve resorted to tees that are too stained for public wear.

celeste – I had no idea about needing cotton while perimenopausal; that’s a helpful tidbit to share here. Thanks for sharing your luck with other retailers, too. It’s so hard to find CUTE stuff in our size!

dangerous lilly – Yep, I can totally see how that style top wouldn’t work for a large chested woman. For me the challenge is the opposite – finding bottoms that fit along with my relatively smaller top – so mix-and-match options really help me. I also think having a B cup is what’s allowed me to wear the XL in the G&M line. Please let us know if you find something that fits the bill of this question in a future comment – we’re always on the lookout for good retailers/options. Thanks.

I’ve had good luck at Kohl’s on occasion. (Do have to check to make sure I’ve found cozy cotton, not a poly-cotton).

Additional tip: Having gotten tired of not finding the medium-length bottoms that I prefer, I’ve learned to buy full-length pajama pants and cut them off. Ditto for changing sleeve length. Jersey knit (i.e. T-shirt material) doesn’t fray, so no hemming necessary.
